Bora Bora Overwater Bungalow: InterContinental Thalasso Review

by Garth

Last updated: 25th March 2025

Whenever you think of a dreamy Bora Bora overwater bungalow, the images you’ve seen in photos will usually be taken from the InterContinental Thalasso Bora Bora. It has the most iconic view of Mount Otemanu from the overwater bungalows. This place has ranked top of our bucket list for a long time, so we were super excited to finally visit one of the world’s most romantic destinations for a tropical luxury stay we’d always dreamt of.

About Bora Bora

Bora Bora is a breathtakingly beautiful island nestled in the remote expanse of the South Pacific. Part of the Society Islands, 1 of 3 archipelagos that make up French Polynesia’s 118 islands, this small gem is just 6 miles long and 2 miles wide, surrounded by lots of tiny islands known as motus.

Often described as one of the most stunning destinations in the world, Bora Bora truly feels like a slice of heaven. we thought it’s insanely beautiful. At its heart, the towering Mount Otemanu, a dormant volcano draped in lush green jungle, rises dramatically against the sky. Encircling the island is a mesmerising turquoise lagoon, home to vibrant coral reefs and an abundance of marine life.

Renowned for its iconic overwater bungalows and world-class resorts, Bora Bora is the ultimate honeymoon escape. But paradise comes at a price – its remote location makes it one of the most expensive destinations on Earth. However, from the moment you step off the plane, the island’s serenity and luxury make every penny worth it. Whether you’re splurging on a dream getaway or saving up for years as we did, visiting Bora Bora is an unforgettable experience.

About The InterContinental Thalasso Bora Bora

We booked our bucket list once in a lifetime overwater villa stay at the 5 star InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa. We can verify it’s breathtakingly beautiful, seriously. It’s a sophisticated and luxurious resort with the most phenomenal location. The Thalasso is just off the main island and only accessible by boat, located on the eastern side of Bora Bora on a private island called Motu Piti Aau (Island of Two Hearts) overlooking the beautiful turquoise water of the Bora Bora lagoon.

Thalasso’s remote location offers an unbelievably beautiful and dramatic view of Mount Otemanu that rises majestically out of the Bora Bora lagoon. This unobstructed view in our opinion is the Thalasso’s biggest asset. Only 3 other hotels in Bora Bora offer a similar view – The Westin, Four Seasons and The St. Regis. The position of the Thalasso resort has the best view of Mount Otemanu.

As well as the stunning scenery, there are only overwater bungalows here, 84 of them in two picturesque chains, built on stilts appear to float over the most turquoise crystal clear water we’ve ever seen. All of the overwater bungalows offer stunning views of the Bora Bora lagoon, and for a premium you can have an even better view of Mount Otemanu from your terrace or even a plunge pool.

Getting There

Our journey to InterContinental Thalasso Bora Bora began at Faa’a International Airport (PPT) in Tahiti, where you’ll board an Air Tahiti or Air Moana flight to Bora Bora. This short 50-minute flight is such an experience in itself, offering breathtaking aerial views of French Polynesia’s emerald-green islands, endless turquoise lagoons, and coral atolls scattered across the South Pacific.

On the final approach we were completely mesmerised as we caught our first glimpse of Bora Bora from the airplane. The vivid turquoise lagoon is the stuff of dreams we had seen on Instagram and all the glossy brochures, we couldn’t believe we were finally here!

PRO TIP: Try to snag a window seat on the left hand side of the cabin (facing the pilot) At Tahiti airport, much to Phil’s annoyance, we queued up at the gate early to make sure we were first in the queue to board. A Japanese couple also did the same, I think they knew this airplane hack! Air Tahiti doesn’t allocate seat reservations on flights to Bora Bora, so do your best to sit on the left hand side for the best views!

Bora Bora’s lovely small airport, also known as Motu Mute Airport

Upon landing at Motu Mute Airport (BOB) in Bora Bora, you won’t find traditional airport chaos. Instead, you’ll step off the plane onto a small, open-air terminal surrounded by palm trees and crystal-clear waters. From here, the InterContinental Thalasso’s private speedboat transfer awaits, ready to whisk you across the stunning lagoon. We received a lovely Polynesian welcome at the resort’s counter and given traditional leis made of fresh flowers, what a welcome to paradise!

The 20 minute boat ride is just magic, we literally couldn’t stop smiling the whole way. We felt like we were in a movie, as we speeded across the shimmering turquoise waters, everything is just like you see in pictures and better!

Arrival at InterContinental Thalasso

As our boat approached the Thalasso pier dock, we could hear the sound from a conch shell horn echoing across the lagoon. This traditional Polynesian welcome marks your arrival in paradise, setting the tone for an unforgettable escape! We were met with genuine smiles and taken on a short golf buggy ride to the resort reception.

We were given refreshing towels, and a signature refreshing vanilla-infused iced tea. The check-in process is relaxed and seamless, allowing you to take in the paradise surroundings – white sand beaches, swaying palm trees, and crystal-clear waters. Everything is designed to feel effortless, luxurious and exclusive. It really is utterly breathtaking!

At this point we were so giddy after seeing the Thalasso from the air and that incredible speed boat journey to the resort, things just kept getting better! After we checked in, our host gave us a full guided resort tour on the golf cart pointing out key amenities along the way before taking us to our private overwater villa.

Our Bora Bora Overwater Bungalow

As we stepped inside our overwater villa, our jaws just dropped! Our host gave us a comprehensive room tour and left us to enjoy a glass of bubbles! we had officially arrived in luxury! Our dreamy Bora Bora overwater bungalow was more than we expected it to be, it really delivered! it was exceptional, just like being in a dream.

Our lagoon view overwater bungalow was 133 which featured tasteful Polynesian-inspired décor, high vaulted ceilings which doesn’t make it feel like a bungalow, and floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the space with natural light. The living room has the best feature – a coffee table with glass panels that let you watch the lagoon life from the comfort of the sofa, fabulous! While the plush king-sized bed faces the lagoon for breathtaking views. The bathroom is pure indulgence, with double vanity sinks and free toiletries and a fabulous deep soaking bathtub overlooking the lagoon water and a separate rainfall shower, heaven! The turndown service is nice too, they replace all the towels, close the curtains and make the bed look pretty.

Step outside onto your private deck, the large shaded terrace offers a welcome rest-bite from the midday sun and features 2 sun loungers. The lower deck offers direct access to the warm, crystal-clear lagoon—perfect for a morning swim or sunset dip.

The thatched roof (or palapa roof) is made from pandanus palm leaves and other local wood like bamboo. We loved waking up under this and opening our eyes to the blue lagoon, such a treat every morning! We also loved the super spacious interior and like the fact outside the villas are spaced apart so you can enjoy a peaceful and private holiday. Every day housekeeping would write cute messages on the mirror, after cleaning and the turndown service, it’s all about the little touches!  We have stayed once before in an overwater bungalow in the Maldives, but this one is another level of luxury.

We did have one issue and that was a cockroach in our wardrobe, which Garth totally freaked out about! However the resort dealt with the issue straight away, and fumigated the room and disposed of the offending creature!

Swimming in the Lagoon

We especially enjoyed having our own jetty to enjoy the sunshine and being able to step down directly into the lagoon from our bungalow for a pre-breakfast swim. The lagoon here isn’t crystal clear because when there’s windy conditions, the water is more cloudy. However it’s surprisingly warm, like getting into a bath, which Garth loved!

We both took turns stepping off our jetty into the lagoon, but sadly didn’t see any fish under our bungalow. We did read before we came snorkelling under the bungalow wasn’t good, which is why we booked a stay in Tahiti first off, where the snorkelling under bungalows is very good. The staff here said if you see a ray or shark you’ll be very lucky. However there are plenty of tropical fish to see elsewhere in the resort.

The Beach & Water Sports

The beach at the InterContinental Thalasso in Bora Bora is gorgeous! Think powder-soft white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, and those unreal views of Mount Otemanu – it’s straight out of a postcard. We spent hours just lounging under the swaying palms, dipping our toes in the warm lagoon, and soaking up the dreamy island vibes.

One of our favourite photo spot was the iconic wooden swing that hangs right over the water! It’s the perfect place to sit back, sway gently, and take in the ridiculously beautiful scenery. Of course, we couldn’t resist snapping a few photos – it’s the ultimate Instagram moment!

If you’re up for a bit of adventure, the resort has plenty of free water sports to keep you busy. We went kayaking a few times across the lagoon, went snorkelling straight from the beach, and even tried paddle boarding to explore the crystal-clear waters. If you fancy a bit more adrenaline, they’ve got jet skis for an additional cost too!

Relaxing by the pool

The main infinity pool at InterContinental Thalasso is a serene oasis, perfectly blending into the surrounding paradise. Overlooking the turquoise lagoon, the pool’s edge seems to disappear into the horizon, creating a seamless view of the iconic Mount Otemanu towering in the distance. Phil loves his pools and liked the gradual zero-entry into this pool, simply glide in with no steps.

Lined with plush sun loungers and swaying palm trees, the pool area offers both sun-soaked relaxation and shaded retreats. Grab a tropical cocktail, and listen to the gentle sounds of the lagoon, it’s a lovely peaceful ambiance, bliss!

At 12 midday, keep an ear out for the sound of the conch horn – it’s your cue that the free poolside cultural sessions are about to begin! These daily activities offer a fun way to immerse yourself in French Polynesian traditions, with hands-on lessons like pareo-tying (learning the stylish ways to wrap a sarong) and palm leaf weaving, where you can craft your own little souvenir. It’s a lovely touch that adds a bit of local flavour to your stay.

Lagoonarium

The Lagoonarium is a private, man made protected marine habitat where guests can experience Bora Bora’s vibrant underwater world up close. This crystal-clear lagoon sanctuary is home to an array of colourful tropical fish and thriving coral gardens, offering a safe and accessible way to explore marine life without venturing into open waters. The lagoonarium features a stunning overwater wedding chapel with a glass bottom, right next to it is a small coral beach and this was our favourite photo spot of the Thalasso.

Garth loved snorkelling here in the calm, shallow waters, spotting parrotfish, butterflyfish, and even a small reef shark while learning about the resort’s eco-friendly conservation efforts on the posters next to the lagoon.

From romantic dinners under the stars to cocktails at sunset or a meal with evening entertainment. Be sure to check out the happy hour times at the bars, as drinks are super expensive! • 🍷 Le Corail – An intimate fine-dining experience with the largest wine cellar in French Polynesia, perfect for a romantic evening.

Reef Restaurant

Reef is the resort’s main restaurant, serving a delicious blend of French and Polynesian flavours and international dishes in an open-air setting.  The breakfast was excellent and the service is exemplary, really attentive topping up our coffee, however flies are a bit of an annoyance it you’re sat outside for breakfast. Make sure you try Bora Bora’s signature dish is Poisson Cru, a Tahitian-style raw fish salad.

PRO TIP: Ask for eggs Benedict at the egg station, you won’t be disappointed.

We had dinner at the Reef for the weekly Polynesian night and bagged a table right outside right next to the stage. This themed dinner showcases an impressive buffet of local specialties, including fresh seafood, coconut-infused dishes, and flavourful Polynesian favourites cooked in an underground oven. As you dine under the stars, the atmosphere comes alive with a vibrant Polynesian dance show featuring rhythmic drumming, and graceful Tahitian dancers telling the stories of their ancestors through movement. The energy is infectious, and by the end of the night, guests are invited to join in the fun!  A lady took some photos of us with the performers which were dreadful, cropping off our heads! 🤣

Le Corail

For an exclusive fine-dining experience, Le Corail offers the largest wine cellar in French Polynesia and an intimate, dimly lit atmosphere. Featuring elegantly plated gourmet dishes, this is the perfect spot for a romantic evening or a special celebration. They offer a tasting menu or 3 course menus.

We decided to go and have a romantic evening, well you only live once especially in Bora Bora, so we spent a small fortune on the Epicurean Menu. Everything is very classy from the service to the delicious food and presentation. To finish off Garth ordered a rum and coffee, which he didn’t like, but Phil ordered a lemon and grapefruit rum which he loved!

With its toes in the sand setting, Sands is the ideal spot for casual beachfront dining. Enjoy freshly grilled seafood, light bites or island-inspired cocktails while taking in unobstructed sunset views over the lagoon. Garth was surprised when his Hawaiian pizza was delivered with no pineapple! they didn’t have any pineapples on the resort the week we visited. Phil ordered tuna tacos which were delicious. They offer free tap water with meals, which is safe to drink. The only issue we found were lots of flies sat outside at lunchtime, but go inside the restaurant and it’s ok.

Nestled right on the powdery white sands, The Sands Bar and Sunset Theatre serves refreshing tropical cocktails, light snacks, and fresh juices in a laid-back beach setting. We enjoyed coming here in the daytime for piña colada cocktails served in coconuts whilst soaking in the island vibes.

In the evening we loved watching the sunset from here, it’s a seriously good spot. We also had a theatre dinner one night watching fire dancing performances on the beach, really good.
